1981 Talbot Sunbeam Lotus

"Henri" owned by Dave Cain


I purchased "Henri" in 2005 from Peter Brown who lives in Glen Vine, Isle of Man. We went for a spin to bring me back a few memories... and as they say, the rest is history!


After doing a bit of searching through the numerous invoices and receipts, the cars history was traced back to its early days as OVM89W in the UK owned by Kingsley Ingram at ICE Motorsport.





Car was first registered in the UK as OVM89W, 1981 Talbot Sunbeam Lotus, and was owned by Kingsley Ingram of ICE Motorsport.


Original colour - all black (no stripes!). Present colour: White with blue strip and red pinstripes - full original works colours with Lombard RAC rally decals from 1980 Rally.


Shell: fitted with GRP front wings, bonnet, arch extensions, front spoiler. Polycarbonate windows in sides and both doors, and polycarbonate tailgate.


Engine: Lotus 2174cc double overhead cam, Cosworth Pistons and Liners, balanced and tuftrided crankshaft, Competition big valve head, HP oil pump, HC Alternator, Lotus works exhaust system - 2" bore through double box silencers. Engine built by QED. Output power 240BHP with 235 ft lbs torque. Dellorto 50mm DHLA Carburettors on works manifold.


Gearbox: ZF 5 speed with dog leg first gear. CR gear kit, and quick shift gear lever.

Axle: 4HA fitted with 4.1 Limited Slip Differential


Wheels/Tyres: choice of either 15" or 13" Minilite style wheels fitted with Dunlop SP Sport moulded slicks for dry tarmac, or Yokohama A031 for wet tarmac/gravel.


Brakes: AP Monte Carlo Calipers (front) with Mintex 1144 pads - vented discs, AP two pot calipers (rear) with Mintex pads (standard compound). Bias control on dashboard for brake distribution/control front/rear.


Other Mods/Details:

Top Speed: 145mph (15" rims) or 135mph (13" rims)

Power Output: 248BHP @ 5,200rpm (Dyno measured at wheels)


Seats - Sparco EvoCompetition, Custom mounts direct to body work

Harnesses -TRS Magnum 6 point

Rollcage - Safety Devices 6 point, fitted with door bars and extra diagonal brace on B pillars.

Sumpguard - Dural Alloy (homologated events) Polycarbonate and steel (not homologated)

Tank Guard - Steel (tank in original position under floor)

Battery - Odyssey Extreme mounted internally behind co-drivers seat

Lighting - Fitted with Works Alloy spot lamp brackets, capable of fitting 6 lamps (2 up and 4 down)

Type - Hella Rallye 2000 lamps (2 fitted with HID conversion)
